Cheryl Dunye is developing an hour long documentary for AMC Television about the people, places, and movies that thrive on Hollywood's edge. Shows are currently in development about amazing Stranger Babies past: Sessue Hayakawa, Alla Nazimova, Ramon Novarro, Pam Grier, Roger Corman, Jean Seberg, Haskell Wexler, and more.

Cheryl is also working on a western and a sci-fi flick, both genre-breakers that will cast "stranger babies" into familiar landscapes to see what kind of changes they incite.

Miramax inks 'Baby' helmer

Miramax Films has inked a deal with Cheryl Dunye to direct "My Baby's Mama" and added Anthony Anderson ("Big Momma's House") to co-star opposite Eddie Griffin.

Pic, penned by Griffin and Damon "Coke" Daniels, will be produced by Griffin with Immortal Entertainment and Brillstein-Grey Entertainment.

The comedy concerns three bachelors whose girlfriends simultaneously become pregnant and their efforts to come to terms with fatherhood.

Brad Weston, exec veep of production, and Laura Rister, director of creative affairs and casting, brought the project into Miramax. Senior veep of production Jeremy Kramer and Rister will oversee the project for Miramax, reporting to co-president of production Meryl Poster.

'Inside' job

Dunye, repped by Broder Kurland Webb Uffner, recently directed the HBO film "Stranger Inside." She received a directing nom at the 2001 Independent Spirit Awards for her work on the film. "Stranger" also received multiple festival awards for Dunye's directing and for its star, Yolanda Ross.

Dunye's first pic, "The Watermelon Woman," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It won the Teddy Award at the 1996 Berlin Film Festival. Dunye's hip-hop comedy "One Bad Sistah" is set up at GreeneStreet Films, and she's on board to direct after she completes "Mama" for Miramax.

Barry Littman negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax. Rick Genow negotiated on behalf of the ICM-repped Anderson.

One Bad Sista

Gotham-based GreeneStreet Films has acquired the urban romantic comedy "One Bad Sista," which Cheryl Dunye penned and will direct. "Sista" tells the story of a young female rapper who disguises herself as a man in order to make it in the male-dominated rap world.

Dunye brought the project to GreeneStreet head of development Jamie Gordon and director of development Courtney Potts, both of whom will oversee it for the shingle. Vicki Cherkas negotiated the pact for GreeneStreet Films; Todd Hoffman of Broder Kurland Webb Uffner negotiated for Dunye.

Handful of kudos for Dunye's Stranger Inside which premiered in spring as an HBO Original Film, garnered an IFP Gotham Award for breakthrough performance of the year for lead actress Yolanda Ross. Dunye's first feature, "The Watermelon Woman," was included in the Whitney Biennial and also won awards at the Berlin Film Festival.

GreeneStreet Films financed the Miramax release "In the Bedroom," directed by Todd Field, starring Sissy Spacek, Marisa Tomei and Tom Wilkinson. GreeneStreet and GoodMachine produced the pic. Upcoming GreeneStreet releases include the Benjamin Bratt starrer "Piñero," which Miramax is distributing in limited release this month; Fisher Stevens' directorial debut, "Just a Kiss," to be released by Paramount Classics in the spring; and "The Chateau," written and directed by Jesse Peretz, to be released by IFC next year.
